The Schweppes Stakes (aka AJ Moir Stakes) is a Group 2 weight-for-age race held at Moonee Valley racecourse on the same day as the Group 1 WS Cox Plate. It is one of the major weight-for-age races on the calendar carrying $200,000 and is run over a distance of 1200 metres (previously 1000m).
It was first run in 1976 and was a Group 1 race until 1978, when it was downgraded to Group 2 status where is has remained since. It has been one by some notable horses in recent years including Miss Andretti, Virage de Fortune, Bomber Bill, Spinning Hill and Falvelon. The Schweppes Stakes has predominantly been won by 3-year-olds.
The Schillaci Stakes and Manikato Stakes are the best indication for form for the Schweppes Stakes, particularly the Schillaci Stakes. This year’s Schillaci Stakes was taken out by the highly impressive and Moonee Valley track lover Lucky Secret, ahead of Apache Cat and Wanted. The Manikato was won by Danleigh ahead of Phelan Ready and Nicconi.
