Caulfield Cup Betting
The Caulfield Cup is a Group 1 event held annually at Caulfield racecourse late October each year. It is one of Australia’s richest races with $2.5 million in prize money up for grabs. It is also regarded as one of the world’s richest handicap races over a distance of 2400 metres. The race combines with the Melbourne Cup to form the ‘Major Cups Double’ with betting on the double hugely popular.
The Caulfield Cup has been won by some of the lands greatest ever horses, the most notable being Railings, Mummify, Northerly, Ethereal, Diatribe, Sky Heights, Might And Power and Let’s Elope.
The best form guides for the Caulfield Cup are the Yalumba Stakes, Toorak Handicap and Herbert Power Stakes, all held a week earlier at Caulfield. These three races have produced 28 winners between them since 1950. This year’s Yalumba Stakes was taken out by Whobegotyou ahead of Heart Of Dreams and Vision And Power. The Toorak was taken out by Allez Wonder ahead of Gold Salute and Rock Kingdom, while the Herbert Power was won by Alcopop ahead of Shocking and Hissing Sid.

2009 Caulfield Cup preview
Race 8 on the cards at 4:05pm. The feature race on the card and this year is expected to be dominated by international visitors. Kirklees ($8.00) is favourite and an Irish raider. He is a better performed stablemate of All The Good who won last year and form internationally has been impeccable, winning past 3 starts convincingly. Cima De Triomphe ($8.50) is another Irish horse who also has fantastic form internationally. There will be queries on the distance, and this is his first start at the distance.
Viewed ($13.00) comes into the race with good preparation after a solid run in the G1 Turnbull Stakes. He struggled in this race last year carrying 54.5kg, but the former Melbourne Cup winner sprinted home in the Turnbull to suggest he has what it takes to win here. C’est La Guerre ($18.00) loves racing on a wet track which it looks likely to be after the recent rain. Is a former NZ Derby winner also at this distance and he is definitely worth a shot here. Performed well at the Turnbull.
Light Vision ($21.00) is a tough stayer who will race on speed and is carrying just 52.5kg. IS a multiple winner at this distance and performs well at Caulfield, could be a good each way shot. Daffodil ($9.00) is an AJC Oaks winner who was terrific two starts back in NZ and then had little luck in the Kelt. Has won at this distance before and is a good place shot. Allez Wonder ($13.00) flew home last week in the G1 Toorak Handicap and is from the Bart Cummings stable. Placed in the Oaks as a 4-yo and will be carrying only 50kg. Must be considered.
Of the others, Master O’Reilly ($14.00) is a former Caulfield Cup winner who ran well last week, finishing 4th in the G1 Yalumba. Is accomplished at this distance and knows how to win at Caulfield. Predatory Pricer ($9.00) was the race favourite prior to getting a poor barrier draw. He has great weight-for-age form and comes in magnificently on the weights. Has had a perfect preparation with placing in the G1 Underwood and G1 Turnbull. Must be considered also.
