The Caulfield Sprint is a Group 2 race held on the same day as the Group 1 Caulfield Cup and is one of the major races of the day. It always attracts a large, but strong field of quality sprinters and is held over a distance of 1000 metres at open handicap conditions. Prize money for the race is $200,000.
The race was first run in 1983 and was upgraded to Group 2 status in 1999. Notable winners include Rubitano (2002), Toledo (1997-98), Ruffles (1996), Shillaci (1994), and Campaign King (1985). It was won last year by Sunburnt Land ahead of Aichi and Biscayne Bay.
It is interesting to note that no filly has ever won this race before. Also only two 3-year-olds have won the race in its short history, those being Jet Spur (2005) and Campaign King (1985). Toledo is the only multiple winner, winning it twice in 1997-98.
