The CF Orr Stakes is a Group 1 event held annually at Caulfield racecourse in early February. It is raced over a distance of 1400 metres and is a weight-for-age race carrying prize money of $400,000. The race usually always attracts a strong field as some of the past winners suggests.
It was first run in 1925 and upgraded to Group 2 status in 1980. In 1993 it was upgraded to Group 1 status and has been one of the key weight-for-age races on the Melbourne autumn carnival calendar ever since. Some of the greats have won the CF Orr Stakes including Maldivian, Elvstroem, Lonhro, Redoute’s Choice, Saintly, Jeune, Let’s Elope, Manikato and Durbridge.
This race is a perfect lead up race to the Group 1 Australia Stakes held a fortnight later, also under weight-for-age conditions, as well as the Group 1 Futurity Stakes held after that. In fact, the CF Orr Stakes has produced. Interestingly, in the last decade there have been three Cox Plate winners who have gone on to finish second in the Orr Stakes.
