The Chatham Stakes is a Group 3 race held on Derby Day at Flemington racecourse in Melbourne, in late October. It is raced over a distance of 1400 metres and is an open handicap carrying $250,000 in prize money. Trainers use this race as lead up race for the Group 1 Emirates Stakes held later the following Saturday as it is similar in distance and conditions.
It was first run in 1978 and upgraded to Group 3 status in 1996. Noteable winners include All Silent last year, Black Bean (1999), Bezeal Bay (1998), Blue Boss (1991), La Caissiere (1984) and Sarsha’s Choice (1978).
Other important races held on the same day as the Carbine Club Stakes are the Group 1 races Victoria Derby, Mackinnon Stakes, Coolmore Stud Stakes and Myer Classic. View previews on all four races by clicking the race name.
