The Colonel Reeves Stakes is a Group 3 race held annually at Ascot racecourse in Perth, the same day as the Group 2 WA Guineas. It is a quality handicap race run over a distance of 1200 metres and carrying prize money of $200,000.
It was first run in 1984 and was upgraded to Group 3 status in 2004. Notable winners include Ellicorsam (2005), Tolo Harbour (1994), Ossie Pak (1989) and Heron Bridge (1984 and 1988). Trainers often use this race as the idea lead up race to the Group 1 Railway Stakes and/or the Group 2 Winterbottom Stakes. Interestingly, no 3-year-old has ever won this race.
The Asian Beau Stakes is the best indication of form heading into the Colonel Reeves Stakes due to the similar nature of distance and conditions. Kasabian won this year’s Asian Beau Stakes ahead of Elliotto and Grand Nirvana.
