Coongy Handicap Betting
The Coongy Handicap (aka David Jones Cup) is a Group 3 event held annually at Caulfied racecourse on Caulfield Cup day. It is a $125,000 race held over a distance of 2000 metres and is an open handicap. It used to be held on the previous Wednesday of the Caulfield Carnival and used as a lead up race to the Caulfield Cup, but has since been renamed the David Jones Cup and held the same day as Caulfield Cup.
The race has a prestigious history dating right back to 1898. It was upgraded to Group 3 status in 1978 and notable winners include Maybe Better, Activiation, Oliver Twist, Circles Of God, Rose OF Kingston and Our Paddy Boy. It is interesting to note that no filly has ever won this race, while the last 3-year-old to win the race was Top Role way back in 1973.
2009 Coongy Stakes Preview
Race 7 on the cards at 3:20pm. Shocking ($4.60) is the favourite and after last week’s second in the G2 Herbert Power, it’s easy to understand why. Prior to that he ran home well at the Valley in the JRA Cup. Ran right behind Alcopop in both those runs and has won at this track and distance before. Will go close here. Baughurst ($5.50) has been sound in the past two runs finishing sixth in the G1 Turnbull and G1 Yalumba. Ran just under 2 lengths behind Whobegotyou in the Yalumba last week and revels at this distance, placing 11 of 16 at the distance, including 3 wins. Must be considered.
Drumbeats ($6.00) has had a good campaign so far since running second first up at Randwick. Won the G2 Shannon Stakes second up and raced like he wants 2000m in the G1 Epsom. Pre Eminence ($8.00) was good second up at the Valley in a leaders race. Is back to 2000m which will suit, hard to knock. Pacino ($10.00).
Of the others, Sermon ($21.00) won well last Sunday in the Cranbourne Cup over 2025m after a strong front-running effort. Has proven in the past that he can back up well and has won at Caulfield before. Hume ($11.00) is a lightly raced 6-yo from Brisbane that drew wide and raced wide in the Hill Stakes. Struggled in the G1 Metropolitan and can be forgiven on the heavy track. Will go close, a good place bet.
