The Eclipse Stakes is a Group 3 event held at Sandown racecourse in Melbourne each November. It is raced over a distance of 1800 metres and is a quality handicap carrying $125,000 in prize money. This race is in fact the last Group race of the Melbourne spring carnival.
It was first run in 1934 and has been a Group 3 race since 1996. Notable winners include Aqua D’Amore (2005), Fields Of Omagh (2001), Fraar (1992), Eastern Classic (1989), Super Impose (1988) and Leica Lover (1974). It is interesting to note that no 3-year-old filly has ever won this race, while the last 3-year-old colt or gelding to of won this race was Brave Salute in 1984.
The Sandown Classic held a week earlier is the ideal lead up race for the Eclipse Stakes. Many horses who have run in the Sandown Classic have backed up a week later, so it pays to run your eye over horses with form in this race when analysing the form guide.
