Flight Stakes Betting Preview
The Flight Stakes is a Group 1 race held each year at Randwick racecourse in Sydney in October. It is held on Epsom Handicap Day which is a huge day of racing including four Group 1 races, the others being the Epsom Handicap, The Metropolitan and the Spring Champion Stakes. The race is held over a distance of 1600 metres and is open to 3-year-old fillies at set weights and carrying prize money of $300,000.
The Flight Stakes was first run in 1947 and was upgraded to Group 1 status in 1985. Some fantastic horses have won the race since it began including Lotteria (2004), Ha Ha (2001), Sunline (1998), and Slight Chance (1992). It was won last year by Samantha Miss.
Be sure to keep a close eye on lead up races held several weeks earlier such as the Silver Shadow Stakes, Tea Rose Stakes and Furious Stakes, as these have been very good guides in recent years. This year’s Silver Shadow Stakes was won by Deer Valley ahead of Melito and Hurtle Myrtle. The Tea Rose Stakes was won by More Joyous ahead of Melito and Deer Valley. While the Furious Stakes was won by Melito ahead of Hurtle Myrtle and Lovemelikearock.
2009 Flight Stakes Preview
Race 5 on the cards at 2:10pm. It is a strong field, but it is very hard to look past short priced favourite More Joyous ($1.65) after her fabulous win in the Group 2 Tea Rose a fortnight ago. She has drawn well here, but has not yet raced at the track or distance, definitely hard to overlook though. We also like Melito ($4.50) who is capable of causing an upset here. She gave More Joyous about 4 lengths in the Tea Rose and was beaten by just 2.3 lengths. She won the G2 Furious Stakes in style and has won at this track.
Run For Naara ($8.00) is proven at this distance and is coming off a nice second in the G2 Stan Fox. Little Surfer Girl ($17.00) is a $1.5m filly that went a fair way to justifying her price tag with a Stakes win last start at this track last weekend, she could be real value here. Hurtle Myrtle ($26.00) is also in form, running a place in the G3 Silver Shadow and G2 Furious, while running fourth to Melito in the G2 Tea Rose, must be considered a place chance here.

2009 Flight Stakes Result
The 2009 Flight Stakes was taken out by the Ms G Waterhouse trained More Joyous (NZ) from barrier 1, carrying 56.0kg in weight. More Joyous (NZ), a 3yo Filly was ridden by N Rawiller and won the race 1.5 lengths ahead of the second placed Sister Madly, who carried 56.0 from barrier 11. Then followed Hurtle Myrtle in third spot .3 lengths behind, carrying 56.0. More Joyous (NZ) won at odds of 2.25.
