The Salinger Stakes (aka Linlithgow Stakes) is a Group 2 race held over a distance of 1200 metres under open handicap conditions. It is held annually on Victoria Derby Day at Flemington racecourse in Melbourne, the same day as Group 1 races the Victoria Derby, Mackinnon Stakes, Myer Classic and Coolmore Stud Stakes. It carries prize money of $350,000 and usually attracts quality sprinters on their way to The Age Classic.
It has a prestigious history dating right back to 1868, and was upgraded to Group 2 status in 1979. Some amazing horses have won this race over the years including Hot Danish last year, Fastnet Rock (2004), Campaign King (1986), All Shot (1972-73), Sky High (1962), Ajax (1938-39), Chatham (1931-33) and the great Phar Lap in 1930.
The Schweppes Stakes has been the best guide to the Salinger Stakes over the years with many horses who perform well in that race going on to run well here. The Schweppes Stakes was taken out this year by the great Apache Cat ahead of Mic Mac and Bank Robber. The Caulfield Sprint (won this year by First Command) has also been a good guide.
