Moonga Stakes
The Moonga Stakes (aka Betfair Stakes) is a Group 3 event held annually at Caulfield racecourse on the same day as the Group 1 Caulfield Cup. It is raced over a distance of 1400 metres and is open to 4-year-olds and up at set weights and penalties conditions. Horses that perform well in this race will use it as a lead up to the Group 1 Emirates Stakes held later in the carnival.
The race has been run since 1982 and was upgraded to Group 3 status in 1994. Notable winners include Perfectly Ready, Thorn Park, Assertive Lad, Flavour, Rough Habit and Vo Rogue. IT ws taken out last year by Royal Discretion ahead of Turrfontein and Stickpin.
The Baguette Stakes held a fortnight earlier is perhaps the best indication of form leading up to the Moonga Stakes. The Baguette was won this year by All Silent paying $13.00, ahead of First Command ($7.50) and Light Fantastic ($9.00).
2009 Betfair Stakes Preview
Race 5 on the cards at 2:00pm. We like Sniper Bullet ($8.00). Ran well first up finishing third in the G2 Shorts at Randwick a fortnight back . Ran only 1.5 lengths behind the great Apache Cat back in the G1 Doomben 10,000 and is a proven winner at this distance. The value is definitely here. Kiloton ($9.00) struggled first up in The Shorts but will be better for the run. Had a solid autumn campaign and if track is dead it will suit.
McClintock ($8.00) is a great Sydney horse who won the G3 Ritchie last start in fine style. Finished third to Absolutelyfabulous in the G3 Cameron at Newcastle and a second in the G3 Concorde Stakes. Is proven at this distance placing 5 of 6 starts (including 3 wins) and must be considered. Rightfully Yours ($5.00) had a nice win first up and then chased Raheeb (who ran 4th in Toorak) hard a fortnight ago here, which is solid form. Has won 4 of 9 from distance and knows how to win at Caufleild. A danger.

2009 Moonga Stakes Result
The 2009 Moonga Stakes was taken out by the Mark De Montfort trained McClintock from barrier 10, carrying 56.5kg in weight. McClintock, a 5yo gelding was ridden by G Schofield and won the race 1.8 lengths ahead of the second placed Rightfully Yours, who carried 56.5 from barrier 3. Then followed Kiloton in third spot .8 lengths behind, carrying 55.5. McClintock won at odds of 8.50.

2008 Moonga Stakes Result
The 2008 Moonga Stakes was taken out by the Ms G Waterhouse trained Royal Discretion from barrier 14, carrying 56.5kg in weight. Royal Discretion, a 4yo gelding was ridden by N Rawiller and won the race .5 lengths ahead of the second placed Turffontein, who carried 56.5 from barrier 7. Then followed Stickpin (NZ) in third spot .2 lengths behind, carrying 56.5. Royal Discretion won at odds of 16.00.
