The Norman Robinson Stakes is a Group 3 event held annually at Caulfield racecourse in Melbourne, the same day as the Group 1 Caulfield Cup. It is a open race for 3-year-olds at set weights conditions over a distance of 2000 metres, carrying prize money of $125,000. It is the first of the middle distance staying events for 3-year-olds in the carnival and is general used as a lead up to the Group 1 Victoria Derby a fortnight later.
It was first held in 1971 and upgraded to Group 2 status in 2001, before being demoted back to Group 3 status in 2005. Notable winners include Casual Pass, Amalfi, Blackfriars, Nothin’ Leica Dane, Omnicorp, Born To Be Queen, Unaware and Lord Metric. Only two fillies have ever won this race, the last in 1991.
The Spring Champion Stakes is the best form guide for this race, as horses that perform well in that will go on and usually perform well in the Norman Robinson. Monaco Consul won this year’s Spring Champion Stakes paying $51, ahead of Gathering ($12) and Viking Legend ($5).
