The RJ Peters Stakes is a Group 3 race held annually at Ascot racecourse in Perth, the same day as the Group 2 WA Guineas. It is raced over a distance of 1500 metres and is an open handicap carrying $125,000 in prize money. Trainers use this race as an ideal lead up race to the Group 1 Railway Stakes held a week later, with this race producing many winners of the Railway Stakes.
It has been run since 1905 and was upgraded to Group 3 status in 1986. Notable winners include El Presidente (2007), Northerly (2000), Jacks Or Better (1997), Heron Bridge (1982) and Tulip Town (1980). Interestingly the last 3-year-old to win was in 1976, while no mare has won the race since 1999.
The Asian Beau Stakes is the ideal lead up race for the RJ Peters Stakes due to the similar style in condition, and this is a step up in distance. Be sure to check out horses with form from the Asian Beau Stakes as it is a great guide. This year’s race was won by Kasabian ahead of Ellioto and Grand Nirvana.
