The Sandown Guineas is a Group 2 event held on the Saturday after the Flemington spring carnival at Sandown racecourse in Melbourne, the same day as the Group 2 Sandown Classic. The race is run over a distance of 1600 metres and is open to 3-year-olds under Set Weights conditions, carrying prize money of $400,000. It is the last of the prestigious 3-year-old set weights races of the Melbourne spring carnival.
It was first run in 1957 at Caulfield racecourse, but was later moved to Sandown in 1964. Between 1957-67 it was a fillies only race, and in 1968-69 it was run over 200m. Notable winners include Over, Baryshnikov, Durbridge, Shankill Lass, and more recently Schilling and Sender.
The Carbine Club Stakes, Batman Handicap and Crown Oaks are all races that have proven a good indication of form heading into the Sandown Guineas, so it pays to give some attention to these races when analysing form. Kidnapped, the winner of the Carbine Club Stakes, is one to look out for in this race after a superb 4 lengths win.
