The Thousand Guineas is held annually at Caulfield racecourse in Melbourne every year; on the Wednesday of the Caulfield Carnival. It is the Group 1 equivalent of the Caulfield Guineas for colts and geldings, held on the Saturday prior. It is run over a distance of 1600m and is open to 3-year-old fillies at set weights. It carries prize money of $500,000 and is a very popular race.
The race has been run since 1946 and has held Group 1 status since 1979. Last year’s race was taken out by Gallica ahead of Cats Whisker and Glowlamp. Notable winners from the past include Miss Finland, Alinghi, Special Harmony, Northwood Plume and Toy Show. The Thousand Guineas is used as an important lead up race for the VRC Oaks and Wakeful Stakes.
The Edward Manifold Stakes is the best indication of form leading into this race. The Edward Manifold is also a race for fillies over 1600m at set weights and has produced 14 Thousand Guineas winners overall. Majestic Music won this year’s race ahead of Fomalite and Silent Surround, so pay close attention to this race.
