The WA Guineas is a Group 2 race held at Ascot racecourse in Perth. It is the feature race of the day which also includes the Group 3 races Colonel Reeves Stakes and RJ Peters Stakes. It is raced over a distance of 1600 metres and is open to 3-year-olds at Set Weights conditions, carrying prize money of $250,000.
It has been held since 1937 and was upgraded to Group 2 status in 1981. Notable winners over the years include Summer Beau (1996), Classy Dresser (1992), Importune (1984), Rare Sovereign (1978) and Ngawyni (1975). It is the first 3-year-old race of the Perth carnival with horses using this as a lead up to the Group 1 Railway Stakes a week later or the WA Derby.
The Fairetha Stakes and the Belgraviar Stakes are the two best lead up races to the WA Guineas, with horses who perform well in these two races usually backing up and performing well again in the WA Guineas. So it pays to pay close attention to horses with form in these two races when analysing form.
