Racing Gear and Equipment

You may of heard terms such as racing gear, racing equipment or gear changes. It’s very important to know and understand the different types of racing gear as it can affect a horse’s performance in a race. An official list of racing equipment has been compiled by the Australian Chairmen of Stewards to ensure that there is uniformity in the conditions of racing across Australia.

One of the rules of Australian racing is that no horse is allowed to race in any approved gear such as blinkers, nosebands, ear muffs etc, unless permission has been obtained from the stewards prior to acceptance time for the race.

Gear Changes

The notification of gear changes on your form guide is a very important one and it’s worth knowing about the various pieces of racing equipment listed above, how they affect a horse’s performance and when a horse is using or ceasing to use this equipment.

All gear changes must be authorised by stewards and that authorisation will only be granted if the trainer can show that the gear change will moderate negative behaviour the horse may display while racing or improve its chances of winning.

Any horse presented for racing without approved equipment, or with unapproved equipment, may be scratched.
