The condition of the track plays a very important part in the outcome of races. Certain horses prefer heavier, wetter tracks while other horses prefer dry, fast tracks. It pays to keep a very close eye on the condition of a track and to cast an eye over the stats on a particular horse in these conditions before placing a wager.
In Australia there are ten different track condition ratings and listed below is the official list.
| Fast | 1 | Dry, hard track |
| Good | 2 | Firm track |
| Good | 3 | Firm track with some give |
| Dead | 4 | Track with give, better side of dead |
| Dead | 5 | Track with significant give, worse side of dead |
| Slow | 6 | Mildy rain affected track, better side of slow |
| Slow | 7 | Rain affected track, worse side of slow |
| Heavy | 8 | Soft track, just into heavy range |
| Heavy | 9 | Very soft track, genuine heavy |
| Heavy | 10 | Very soft and wet track, heaviest category |
If a track is any worse than heavy 10 or any other large amount of rain which would be deemed as causing the race unsafe, the meeting can often be abandoned. The announcement of upgrades or downgrades of track conditions are indicated the sounding of a siren at the track.
