Boasting a massive $5 million prize pool it has attracted plenty of interest across the globe. Even more so since joining the "World Series Racing Championship" in 1999. The Cox Plate sits alongside other famous races in the series such as;

King George VI and Queen Elizabeth Stakes at Ascot, the Japan Cup, the Dubai World Cup, the Arlington Million, the Hong Kong Cup, the Canadian International Stakes, the Grosser Preis von Baden, the Irish Champion Stakes, the Breeders' Cup Turf and the Breeders' Cup Classic.

Cox Plate Betting

Given the reputation of the Cox Plate both within Australia and abroad it's no surprise that the event is one of the most popular races to bet on each year.

The race attracts some of the greatest thoroughbreds in the world and it's not uncommon for upsets to take place. Since 2000 only 4 favourites have won the race, a statistic which includes champion mare Winx two victories in 2015 and 2016.

There are a number of lead up races that have proven to be popular form guides to the Cox Plate. These races include the Caulfield Stakes, Caulfield Guineas and the Turnbull Stakes.

Although some bookmakers will offer a Cox Plate - Melbourne Cup double market it has proven to be an extremely rare occurrence with just 6 horses managing to achieve the feat.

Horses to complete the double; Makybe Diva, Might and Power, Saintly, Nightmarch, Phar Lap and Rising Fast.

Cox Plate Field

The field for the Cox Plate is limited to just 14 runners and 4 emergencies.

The field gets released on the Tuesday leading up to the race and given the tight course that is Moonee Valley the barrier draw is also critical for the chances of many runners.

Each year the race generally attracts over 200 nominations.

Cox Plate Entertainment

Daryl Braithwaite's 'The Horses' has become the unofficial anthem for the Cox Plate.

The song has been performed on Cox Plate day by Braithwaite on a number of occasions and have proven to be a fan favourite.
