The Alister Clark Stakes is a Group 2 race held at Moonee Valley racecourse in Melbourne on William Reid Stakes Day each February. The race itself is run over a distance of 1600 metres and is open to 3 year old colts and geldings at set weights and penalties conditions. Prize money of $200,000 is on offer.
It was first run in 1939 as an open aged handicap race until 1986 when it became a 3-year-olds race. In 1979 it was upgraded to Group 2 status which it has remained at since. Some decent horses have won this race over the years and then gone on to bigger and better things with names such as Titanic Jack, Mr Murphy, Pins, Dignity Dancer, Zabeel and Vo Rogue just a few names to mention.
The Alister Clarke Stakes is used as an ideal lead up race for the Cadbury Guineas and Autumn Classic held later on in the Autumn Carnival. Two horses, Durbridge (1991) Naturalism (1992) have gone on to win the AJC Australian Derby in the same year.
