All Aged Stakes

Race Preview

The All Aged Stakes is a Group 1 Australian thoroughbred race held annually each year at Randwick racecourse in Sydney. It is held over a distance of 1400m and is held at weight-for-age conditions. It is held as part of the Sydney autumn racing carnival and carries prize money of $300,000.

It was first held in 1868 and prior to 2004 the race was held over 1600m, but is now raced over a distance of 1400m. Many great horses have won the All Aged Stakes with champions such as Sunline, Ajax, Emancipation, Carbine and Tulloch notable winners.

The race is held on Sydney Cup day at Randwick and is one of the bigger days of the Sydney autumn carnival with three other Group 1 races on the cards including the Sydney Cup, Champagne Stakes and the Queen Elizabeth Stakes.

Spotting Winners

Always be on the lookout for horses backing up from the Doncaster Handicap held a week earlier. This particular race has produced many winners in the All Aged Stakes over the past and is the perfect lead up race. Horses contesting the TJ Smith Stakes also have a good record here as well.

It’s wise to stay clear of 3-year-old horses in this race. The last colt or gelding to win was Flying Spur in 1996, while the last filly to win was Valicare way back in 1926.

Gai Waterhouse has a particularly good record in this race, she is actually the leading trainer in this race so always cast an eye over any runner she may have in the race.
