Race Preview

The Cadbury Australian Guineas is a Group 1 thoroughbred race held at Flemington racecourse in March each year. With prize money on offer of $750,000 it is one of the last of the big races of the Victorian racing season. It was first run in 1986 has established a reputation as a maker of stallions. Many of the nation's leading sires gained their reputation through success at the Guineas.

The race itself is open to 3 year olds at Set Weights and is raced over a distance of 1600m. It is the premier three-year-old event held at Flemington during the carnival and one of the biggest races on the calendar. It has been run since 1986 and boasts an honour roll of winners such as Reset, Mahogany, Dash For Cash, Zabeel, and more recently Apache Cat, Miss Finland and Light Fantastic.

The Australian Guineas takes place on what is known as 'Super Saturday at Flemington' - the biggest race day of the Melbourne Autumn Carnival, involving seven group races. When analysing the Australian Guineas, ensure you check lead up form from such races as the CS Hayes Stakes and Alistair Clark Stakes. These two races have produced plenty of winners in previous years and have generally been a good guide for predicting place getters.
