Race Preview

The AJC Australian Oaks is a Group 1 race held every April at Randwick racecourse. It is raced over a distance of 2400 meters and is run under same weight conditions. The race is open to three year old filles and carries a prize purse of $350,000.

It was first run in 1922 and has a very rich and proud history. It’s the premier race for 3yo fillies during the autumn carnival in Sydney and one of the biggest races on the Randwick racing calendar. Some fabulous fillies have won this race in the past, more recently Daffodil, Serenade Rose, Wild Iris, Sunday Joy, Grand Archway, Triscay and Research.

It is run the same day as two other Group 1 events, those being the Doncaster Handicap and The Galaxy. It’s one of the biggest race days at Randwick and a big crowd will always assemble. The race is traditionally held a week after the AJC Derby.

Spotting Winners

Be sure to check out important lead up races such as the Storm Queen Stakes or the Adrian Knox Stakes, as these two races have proven to be the best indication of form over the years producing many AJC Oaks winners.

As the race is run over 2400 metres in distance at set weights, the better females are favoured so always stick with the better horses in this race. A quick look at the odds of recent winners sees plenty of shorties winning, so we suggest staying away from roughies in the AJC Oaks.

Also never discount a Bart Cummings trained horse, he has won this race more than any other trainer in history and his counter is still ticking. Jockey Glen Boss also has a good record in the race, so pay close attention to whichever horse he is riding, should he be in the race.
