Caulfield Guineas Betting
The Caulfield Guineas is a Group 1 race for 3-year-olds at set weights conditions. It is held annually at Caulfield racecourse in Melbourne and is the feature race on what is known as ‘Caulfield Guineas Day - the first day of the three day Caulfield Carnival. It carries prize money of $1 million and is one of the most prestigious races on the calendar. Other Group 1 races held on the day include the Yalumba Stakes and Toorak Handicap. It is raced over a distance of 1600m and is open to 3-year-olds at set weight conditions.
It was first run in 1881 and upgraded to Group 1 status in 1979. Some brilliant horses have won the race throughout history with notable winners including Lonhro, Redoute’s Choice, Mahogany, Red Anchor, Grosvenor, Sovereign Red, Storm Queen and the great Ajax. Interestingly, no filly has won this race since Surround in 1976.
Pay close attention to lead up races when analysing the Caulfield Guineas. Races that are of a similar distance and conditions have been a good guide over the years, races such as the Stutt Stakes held a fortnight earlier. Carrara won this year’s Stutt Stakes ahead of Extra Zero and Miss With Attitude. While the Caulfield Guineas has also produced 18 Victoria Derby winners.
2009 Caulfield Guienas Preview
Race 7 on the cards at 4:00pm. This race looks likely to be taken out between two leading contenders – Denman and Trusting. Denman ($2.60) will be looking for his sixth straight victory since his debut and has great form winning the G3 Run to Rose, G1 Golden Rose and G2 Stan Fox Stakes. Is untested at 1600m, but has been performing well between 1100-1400m. Definitely worth considering. Trusting ($4.50) charged to the line in the G3 Guineas Prelude at this track a fortnight ago and comes in with form after winning the G2 Warick and running second behind Denman in the G1 Golden Rose. Will be his first start at 1600m, but has been running well between 1200-1400 and looks capable.
The Bart Cummings trained So You Think ($8.50) is lightly raced, but has shown plenty of promise. Coming off a win in the G3 Gloaming Stakes a fortnight ago over 1800m and must be respected. Carrara ($16.00) will be looking for its fourth straight win, the best being the Henry Bucks carrying 59kg at Flemington. Coming off a win in the G2 Stutt Stakes a fortnight ago and is a good place chance. The Gai Waterhouse trained Manhattan Rain ($6.50) has huge wraps after a great 2-yo season. Ran well first up winning the G1 Sires Produce Stakes in Sydney and ran third in the G3 Guineas Prelude.
Other outsiders who have place claims include Tickets ($4.50) who fell midrace in the Prelude. Won last weekend at Flemington and should improve here. Extra Zero ($15.00) finished hard at the Valley in the G2 Stutt Stakes and will be better for the trip. A horse very much on the up. Starspangledbanner ($12.00) broke a run of three straight wins by finishing fourth in the Guineas Prelude, but can’t knock his form. He loves this track but distance could be a concern.
