Yalumba Stakes Betting

The Yalumba Stakes (aka Caulfield Stakes) is a Group 1 race held on Caulfield Guineas Day each year at Caulfield racecourse in Melbourne. It is raced over a distance of 2000m and is held under weight for age conditions, carrying prize money of $400,000. It is held the same day as the Caulfield Guineas and the Toorak Handicap.

It was first held in 1886 and upgraded to Group 1 status in 1979. Some fabulous horses have been successful in this race before going on to win races such as the Melbourne Cup, Caulfield Cup and Cox Plate several weeks later. In fact the Yalumba Stakes has produced 14 Caulfield Cup winners, 12 Cox Plate winners and 3 Melbourne Cup winners. Most notably Lonhro, Northerly, Might And Power, Bonecrusher, Ajax and Comic Court.

There are some good lead up races to look at when analysing the Yalumba Stakes. Pay close attention to races of a similar distance and conditions such as the Underwood Stakes and Dato Tan Chin Nam Stakes. Heart Of Dreams took out the the 2009 Underwood Stakes ahead of Whobegotyou and Predatory Pricer. While Whobegotyou won the Dato Tan Chin Nam Stakes ahead of Mic Mac and Jolie’s Shinju.

2009 Yalumba Stakes Preview

Race 6 on the cards at 2:40pm. Whobegotyou ($2.20) is the hot favourite and it is hard to fault it’s form. He has had a fantastic campaign so far, particularly the last two starts where he won the G2 Feehan Stakes and backed up with a second in the G2 Underwood Stakes. He is proven at this distance and loves racing at Caulfield, must be considered here. Heart Of Dreams ($3.40) looks the likely danger, finishing ahead of Whobegotyou when winning the G1 Underwood Stakes last start at this track. He had no luck in the G2 Makybe Diva Stakes and is making first start at this distance, so distance could be a query, but should definitely be up there.

Of the others, Zarita ($16.00) is a proven winner at this course and distance and proved its worth winning the G2 Stutt Stakes over 1600. Pulled up last start in the G1 Underwood, but could prove to be a danger here. Nom De Jeu ($9.00) has had two runs since resuming and has shown promising form with two seconds. Only start at this track was a second in the Caulfield Cup, but has placed 4 times in 5 starts at this distance, including 1 win. Must be considered for a place.

Master O’Reilly ($9.00) was excellent first up finishing third in the G2 Makybe Diva Stakes, before finishing seventh in the G1 Underwood. Vision And Power ($10.00) will be good enough if the track is rain affected, so keep an eye out. Douro Valley ($35.00) has poor form heading into this race, but won this race as a $41 outsider last year.

2009 Caulfield Stakes Result

The 2009 Caulfield Stakes was taken out by the M A Kavanagh trained Whobegotyou from barrier 5, carrying 58.0kg in weight. Whobegotyou, a 4yo gelding was ridden by D Oliver and won the race .8 lengths ahead of the second placed Heart Of Dreams, who carried 58.0 from barrier 4. Then followed Vision And Power (NZ) in third spot .8 lengths behind, carrying 59.0. Whobegotyou won at odds of 2.11.
