Race Preview

The Champagne Stakes is a Group 1 race held every April at Randwick racecourse. It is raced over a distance of 1600 meters and is run under same weight conditions. The race is open to two year olds of any sex and carries a prize purse of $300,000.

It was first run in 1866 and has a very proud history, producing many stars of the turf. Some of the more notable names include Dance Hero, Burst, Red Anchor, Luskin Star, Baguette, Vain, Storm Queen, Sky High and Todman.

It is held on the last day of the Sydney autumn carnival and it is one of the biggest days on the Randwick racing calendar with four massive Group 1 races. Other Group 1’s on the day include the Sydney Cup, All Aged Stakes and Queen Elizabeth Stakes.

Spotting Winners

If you want to pick a winner in this race, then you simply MUST look at form from the AJC Sires Produce Stakes held a few weeks prior. Pretty much every winner of the Champagne Stakes comes via this race and it’s the perfect lead up race. Be sure to check it out.

Fillies have a good record in this race over the years, so never discount them here. Gai Waterhouse also has an exceptional record at this race, we’d highly recommend considering any of her horses as she knows what it takes to win this race.

Stick to the best horses in this race, the roughies have an average record in recent times. Most of the recent winners have been short priced favourites or one of the leading contenders.
