The DC McKay Stakes is a Group 3 race held every April at Morphettville racecourse. It is raced over a distance of 1100 meters and is run under quality conditions. The race is open to horses of any age and sex and carries a prize purse of $100,000.
It was first run in 1968 and was upgraded to Group 3 status in 1980. It has changed formats several times over the years, it has been run over distances of 1450m and 1000m, but has now settled at the distance of 1100m. The most notable winners include Here De Angels, Bomber Bill, Super Elegant, Tole and Beau George.
The race is a quality handicap sprint and will usually attract some very good gallopers who are on their way to the Group 1 Goodwood over 1200m at the same track a fortnight later.
We’d recommend analysing the RN Irwin Stakes held several weeks before the DC McKay Stakes. This has been a very handy form guide for this race producing several winners and place getters.
This race usually has a capacity field also, making finding a winner tough at the best of times. But what a big field means is more value to be had, so be sure to look at local gallopers with consistent form coming into the race.
Stay away from fillies if you can help it, the last filly to win was Boardwalk Angel in 1989. Also stay clear of mares if you can help it.
