The Expressway Stakes is a Group 2 race held at Rosehill racecourse annually, usually in early February. It is a weight-for-age race run over a distance of 1200 metres and carries prize money of $200,000. The race attracts quality sprinters, as a quick look over the honour roll suggests.
It was first run in 1974 and was upgraded to Group 2 status five years later in 1979. Some of the stars of Australian turf have won this race with names such as Lonhro, Mr Innocent, Saintly, Soho Square, Joanne, Kingston Town and Zephyr Bay.
Trainers will often use this race as a lead up to other important races later in the Autumn carnival such as the Apollo Stakes or Chipping Norton Stakes. Interestingly, no filly has won this race since Diamond Shower prevailed in 1987. Mentality (2007) is the last colt or gelding to win.
