The Geelong Cup is a Group 3 race held each year at Geelong racecourse during the spring carnival. The race is one of the biggest country cups on the racing calendar in Victoria and always attracts a huge crowd. The $215,000 in prize money makes it a big race and it is held over a distance of 2400 metres. It is an open handicap.
The race has a prestigious history dating back to 1872. It was upgraded to Group 3 status in 2004 and has been one by some very notable horses which have gone on to much bigger and better things. Bauer (2008), The Fuzz (2007), On A Jeune (2005), Media Puzzle (2001), Karasi (2001) and Bohemiath (1999) are some of the bigger names in recent times. Interestingly no 3-year-old has ever won this race, while the last mare to win was Oregon Star in 1997.
The Geelong Cup has been a great guide to the Melbourne Cup, with many Geelong Cup winners going on to run a place in the Melbourne Cup a fortnight later. One horse, Media Puzzle (in 2002) went on to win the Melbourne Cup. The 2001 winner Karasi won three consecutive Nakayama Grand Jumps in Tokyo between 2005-07. This is an example of the quality that is on offer in the Geelong Cup.
