George Main Stakes Betting
The George Main Stakes is a Group 1 race held yearly at Randwick racecourse in Sydney. It is a weight-for-age race held over a distance of 1600 metres and is recognised as the premier weight-for-age race during the Sydney Spring Carnival. It carries prize money worth $300,000 and will this year be held on AFL Grand Final, making the day one of the biggest days of sport on the Australian calendar.
The race was first run in 1949 and was upgraded to Group 1 status in 1980. It was named after George Main, a former chairmen of the Australian Jockey Club and between the years of 1983 to 2001 it was held at Warwick Farm race course. Some great horses have won the George Main Stakes over the years including Mentality (2007), Racing To Win (2006), Grand Armee (2004), Lonhro (2003), Shogun Lodge (1999) and Kingston Town (1981-82).
There is some very important lead up races to analyse when looking for winners in the George Main Stakes. Races held earlier in the carnival such as the Warwick Stakes, Tramway Stakes and Theo Marks Stakes, which are races of a similar nature, have produced winners which have gone on to success in the George Main Stakes.
The Warwick Stakes was won this year by Trusting ahead of O’lonhro and Mr Baritone. The Tramway Stakes was won by Rangirangdoo ahead of Strat’s Flyer and Murray’s Sun, while the Theo Marks Stakes was won by Racing To Win, followed by Rock Kingdom and Triple Honour.
Also keep in mind that no mare has won this race since Ma Chiquita in 1986, while the last 3-year-old to win the race was Viscount in 2001. Successful horses in this race usually will go on to bigger and better things such as the Epsom Handicap, Yalumba Stakes and the Cox Plate.
