The Golden Slipper Stakes is a Group 1 race held every April at Rosehill racecourse. It is raced over a distance of 1,200 meters and is run under same weight conditions. The race is open to two year olds of any sex and carries a prize purse of $3,500,000.
It is held the same day as four other Group 1 races in the George Ryder Stakes, Queen Of The Turf Stakes, Storm Queen Stakes and The BMW. The race day itself is known as Slipper Day and it is one of the biggest race days in the world. The Golden Slipper is the world’s richest 2-yo thoroughbred race.
The race was first run in 1957 and some of the greats have gone on to win right back to Todman, Skyline, Sky High, Pago Pago and Storm Queen. While in more recent years Belle du Jour, Miss Finland, Forensics and Sebring have gone on to success after winning the slipper.
There are plenty of important lead up races for the Golden Slipper. Usually the colts and geldings will come via the Todman Slipper Trial and Pago Pago Stakes, while the fillies will come via the Reisling Slipper Trial and Magic Night Stakes. The majority of winners have come from these four races so pay close attention to this year’s results.
Gai Waterhouse has won 3 of the past 9 Golden Slippers, so it pays to never discount one of her runners. She actually became the only trainer to win the trifecta in 2001, when Ha Ha beat stablemates Excellerator and Red Hannigan.
