Race Preview

The Karrakatta Plate is a Group 2 race held every April at Ascot racecourse. It is raced over a distance of 1200 meters and is run under same weight conditions. The race is open to two year olds of any sex and carries a prize purse of $500,000.

This race has a long and proud history dating back to 1900 and was actually a Group 1 race between the years of 1985-98, however it was downgraded back to Group 2 status in 1999. It is regarded as Western Australia’s premier 2yo race and is also one of their biggest races as it carries half a million in prize money.

Some very handy horses have won this race over year before going on to bigger and betetrthings. Some of the more notable names include Bomber Bill, Jacks Or Better, Top Post, Burgess Queen, Vain Prince and Par Avion.

The Karrakatta Plate is used as the ideal lead up to the Group 3 WATC Sires Produce held a fortnight later. Several horses have even gone on to win the $1 million Railway Stakes later on in the year.

Spotting Winners

We recommend looking at horse that come into this race via the Perth Stakes as this has been the best indication of form over recent years. The Listed Gimcrack Stakes has also been a handy indication of form also.

Fillies have a particularly good record in this race in recent years, but time shows that geldings perform better overall so always consider a gelding. Also don’t be afraid to back a roughie, the last few years has seen $26, $21 and $13 winners.
