The Kewney Stakes is a Group 2 race held at Flemington racecourse annually, the same day as three Group 1 races in the Newmarket Handicap, Australian Cup and Australian Guineas. It is raced over a distance of 1600 metres and is open to 3-year-old fillies at set weights. It carries prize money of $400,000 and is the premier 3-year-old fillies race held at Flemington during the autumn carnival.
It was first run in 1952 and was upgraded to Group 2 status in 1980. Some pretty impressive horses have prevailed in this race over the years including the likes of Gallica, Special Harmony, Sunline, Northwood Plume, Mannerism, and Deck the Halls.
The race has recently received a boost in prize money and has been reduced in distance to 1400m in a bid to make it a more higher status race for 3-year-old fillies during the Melbourne autumn carnival. It has always been regarded as an important lead up to Group 1 races such as the Australian Oaks, Storm Queen Stakes and Australasian Oaks.
