Myer Classic

Race Preview

The Myer Classic is a Group 1 fillies and mares race held annually at Flemington racecourse in Melbourne in late October on Victoria Derby Day. The race will usually attract a strong field of fillies and mares and is race under weight-for-age conditions over a distance of 1600 metres. Other Group 1 races on Derby Day include the Victoria Derby, Coolmore Stud Stakes and Mackinnon Stakes.

The race has been held since 1988 and in a short time has risen to a very important race. It was Group 3 status in 1995-96 and Group 2 status from 1997-2003. In 2004 it was upgraded to Group1 status and has been a weight-for-age race since 2002. It was previously known as the Honda Legend. Notable winners include Forensics, Divine Madonna, Lotteria, Miss Potential, Bonanova and Excited Angel. Interestingly, the race has never been won by a 3-year-old.

The Cox Plate is a great lead up race for the Myer Classic, held a week earlier, with many runners backing up again. Other lead up races which can be used as a good form line include the Tristarc Stakes, Let’s Elope Stakes and the Toorak Handicap. Last year’s winner Forensics came through the Blazer Stakes.
