The Queen Of The South Stakes is a Group 2 race held every April at Morphettville racecourse. It is raced over a distance of 1600 meters and is run under SWP conditions. The race is open to three years and older filles and mares and carries a prize purse of $150,000.
It was first run in 1980 as a Listed Race, however upgraded to Group 3 status in 1985, then upgraded again to Group 2 status in 1987 where it has remained since.
It has been won by some handy horses in the past with names like Spectrum, Miss Tessia, Our Marquis, Shavano Miss, Canny Lass, Case Belle and the great Rose Of Kingston.
The race attracts good fillies and mares, usually the best local ones, as well as several interstate raiders.
There is no specific race which has been producing winners in the past decade or so, but we’d suggest taking a look at the Group 1 Robert Sangster Stakes several weeks earlier, as contenders in that race usually go on to contest the Storm Queen Stakes.
The set weights conditions will favour the better female runners in this race and as a result we’ve seen plenty of shorties win in recent years. We’d recommended steering clear of roughies if you can, usually one of the favourites will win this race.
