The Queen Of The Turf Stakes is a Group 1 race held every April at Rosehill racecourse. It is raced over a distance of 1,500 meters and is run under weight for age conditions. The race is open to three years and older filles and mares and carries a prize purse of $400,000.

It is one of five Group 1 races held on Slipper Day which also includes the Golden Slipper Stakes, George Ryder Stakes, Storm Queen Stakes and The BMW. It’s a fillies and mares race which usually attracts a very strong field each year.

It was first run in 1972 and was upgraded to Group 1 status in 2005 due to the quality of horses it was producing. The race is often used as the ideal lead up race for fillies or mares wishing to compete in the Group 1 Doncaster Handicap held later in the carnival.

Spotting Winners

Fillies and Mares races are tough to pick at the best of times, but a look at the results over the last decade shows us that short priced horses have been winning the Queen Of The Turf Stakes. As it is a weight for age race, it favours the better horses so be sure to pay close attention to the favourites, as outsiders don’t have a great record in this race.

Be sure to consider John Hawkes or Gai Waterhouse trained horses in this race, as these two have an exceptional record as the last decade shows. Jockey Darren Beadman also has had great success with riding winners here, so be sure to look who he is riding. It’s interesting to note that twelve 3-year-olds have won this race since the inception of the race, that a ratio of 1 in every 3.
