Randwick Guineas

Race Preview

The Randwick Guineas is held every March at Randwick racecourse and is a Group 1 Event. It is one of the best three-year-old races during the Sydney Autumn Carnival and has attracted many a fine galloper since its inception in 1935. Some of the notable winners of the Guineas include Universal Prince, Arena, Royal Show, Octagonal, and more recently Weekend Hussler and Mentality.

The race itself is run over a distance of 1600 metres and is an open three-year-old race at set weights. Prize money for the race is $550,000 making it one of the richer races of the carnival. The winner of the Randwick Guineas is exempt from ballot for the AJC Derby and Doncaster Handicap.

This race has changed in emphasis now that it is run over 1600m. It became a crucial lead-up to races like the George Ryder Stakes (1500m) at Rosehill and the Doncaster Handicap (1600m) at Randwick. Mentality (2007) was runner up to Haradasun in both races after winning the Randwick Guineas.

When analysing this race, ensure you pay close attention to important lead up races. The Hobartville Stakes is a key race as winners of this race usually run on and perform strongly in the Randwick Guineas.
