The Red Anchor Stakes is a Group 3 event held annually at Moonee Valley racecourse in Melbourne, the same day as the Group 1 Cox Plate. It is held over a distance of 1200 metres and is open to 3-year-olds only, at set weights and penalties conditions. It carries prize money of $125,000.
The race itself was first run in 1985 and upgraded to Group 3 status in 1990. It was held for colts and geldings right up until 2001. Noteable winners include Royal Asscher (2007), Yell (2002), Towkay (1997), Spartacus (1996), Sequalo (1993) and Rubiton (1986). The last filly to win was Corton Charlemagne in 2006.
The McNeil Stakes is probably the best indication of form heading into the Red Anchor Stakes as it is the same distance and conditions, with many horses using this as the perfect lead up race. The McNeil Stakes was taken out by Starspangledbanner (also the Caulfield Guineas winner) ahead of Tollesprit and Eclair Fastpass.
