The Robert Sangster Stakes is a Group 1 listed thoroughbred race held annually in either March or April at Morphettville racetrack, Adelaide. Formerly known as the Swettenham Stud Stakes, the race was renamed to the Robert Sangster Stakes in 2005 to recognise the contribution of Robert Sangster - the prolific owner and breeder who was principal of Swettenham Stud. The race is conducted by the South Australian Jockey Club and is worth $300,000.
The race is held over a distance of 1200m and is open to fillies and mares at weight for age conditions. The Robert Sangster Stakes is the premier race held for females during the Adelaide racing carnival and attracts plenty of betting interest. It was first run in 1983 and was promoted to Group 1 status in 2005, having previously been a Group 2 and 3 listed race.
Alinghi is the highest profile horse to of won this race with a time of 1:08.77 back in 2005. Interestingly, Alinghi finished second to Fastnet Rock in the 2005 Lightning Stakes at Flemington, before winning both the Robert Sangster Stakes and the Newmarket Hanicap.
