Race Preview

The SAJC Goodwood, formerly the Goodwood Handicap, is a Group 1 thoroughbred race held each May at Morphettville racetrack in Adelaide. The race has a long history dating back to 1880 where D.O.D. won the inaugural race. The current prize money for this race is at $300,000 and its one of South Australians richest races.

The Goodwood is raced over a distance of 1200m and is open to thoroughbreds at set weights and penalties. However, the first 121 years of this race was held at handicap conditions, but was changed in 2007 to set weights and penalties. It has also been named the Marlboro Plate and Goodwood Stakes over the years.

The race is regarded as the premier sprint race of the Adelaide autumn carnival and usually a strong field of sprinters will make up the field. Some great horses have won the race over the years with names such as Takeover Target, Bomber Bill, Ueclase, Tango Miss, Matrice, Royal Gem and Aurie’s Star all prevailing in the Goodwood in the past.

Often runners who contest The Goodwood will go on to race up in Brisbane during the Brisbane Winter Carnival, and more specifically, the Doomben 10000 race.

Spotting Winners

Be sure to look at form from the RN Irwin Stakes and the DC McKay Stakes as these two races have proven to be the ideal lead up race over the years. These races have produced multiple winners in the past.

Bart Cummings has an exceptional record in The Goodwood, should he win the race this year he will go on to equal the all time record for leading trainers.

3-year-old horses have a very good record in this race also, many have won recently so be sure to check out any 3yo horses. Don’t be afraid to back roughies here either, we’ve seen plenty of long shots in the past few years win at odds of $31, 14 and $11.
