Schillaci Stakes Betting
The Schillaci Stakes is a Group 2 race held annually at Caulfield racecourse in Melbourne. It is a great sprint race held over 1000m at weight for age conditions and carries prize money of $200,000. It is held on Caulfield Guineas Day which includes three Group 1 races; the Caulfield Guineas, Yalumba Stakes and Toorak Handicap.
It was first run in 1970 and in recent years has been won by some magnificent horses which have gone on to much bigger and better things. Winners include Miss Andretti, Gold Edition, Spinning Hill, Falvelon, Mahagany and Mr Magic.
The Manikato Stakes is a great indicator for this race as it is also a weight for age sprint, held a fortnight earlier. The Manikato Stakes has produced ix Schillaci Stakes winners overall so it is a great guide. The 2009 Manikato Stakes was taken out by Danleigh ahead of Phelan Ready and Nicconi.
2009 Schilacci Stakes Preview
Race 4 on the cards at 2:00pm. Apache Cat ($4.00) is the favourite, but was found out first up last start in the G1 Manikato Stakes a fortnight ago, finishing sixth. Apache Cat is a winner of seven Group 1 races and can never be dismissed. He is a specialist at Caulfield winning 6 of 9 starts, including a second, plus has won 2 of 3 at this distance. He has impeccable second up form with 6 wins and 3 places from 9 starts.
Wanted ($5.50) is likely to be the nearest danger. He has an excellent record on top of the ground and there was plenty to like about his effort first up behind Black Caviar in the G2 Danehill Stakes, where he finished second. Finished ahead of Apache Cat in last month’s G1 Manikato Stakes and must be considered. Lucky Secret ($5.00) has form at Caulfield placing in all 6 starts here, including 3 wins. He is also a distance specialist, winning 5 of his 7 starts at 1000m, and placing the other 2.
Of the others, Morgan Dollar ($8.50) has had two runs back and was excellent last start in the G3 McEwen Stakes, finishing second. Was close in the G1 Oakleigh Plate here and is a proven performer at this distance. Paprika ($8.00) hasn’t put a foot wrong since debuting a year ago, has won 4 of 5 including a second and is definitely one to watch here. Turffontein ($12.00) is another one to watch out for after winning the G1 Sir Rupert Clarke last month. He followed that up with an 8th in the G1 Manikato Stakes after some bad luck, plus the distance could be a concern, but he is one to include.

2009 Schillaci Stakes Result
The 2009 Schillaci Stakes was taken out by the A J Vasil trained Lucky Secret from barrier 8, carrying 58.5kg in weight. Lucky Secret, a 6yo gelding was ridden by N Rawiller and won the race 2.3 lengths ahead of the second placed Apache Cat, who carried 58.5 from barrier 5. Then followed Wanted in third spot 1 lengths behind, carrying 53.0. Lucky Secret won at odds of 4.50.
