The South Pacific Classic is a Group 3 race held every April at Randwick racecourse. It is raced over a distance of 1,400 meters and is run under SWP conditions. The race is open to three year olds of any sex and carries a prize purse of $125,000.
It is a relatively new race – it was only added to the Australia racing calendar in 2001. It is used by 3-year-olds who elected not to go down the AJC Derby or AJC Oaks avenue and who prefer racing over shorter sprinting distances.
A quick look at the honour roll shows that some very handy horses have contested this race and gone on to bigger things, most notably Danleigh. Others include Fraveshi, Royal Discretion, Century Kid and Bollinger.
It is held on one of Randwick’s biggest race days – Doncaster Handicap Day. Other big races on the day include three Group 1 events such as the Doncaster Handicap, AJC Oaks and The Galaxy.
There are three lead up races which have been great guides since this races’ inception in 2001. Be sure to analyse form from the Darby Munro Stakes, Surround Stakes and the Phar Lap Stakes.
Also be sure to always consider a John Hawkes trained horse, he has won this race a whopping four times so far so obviously knows what he is doing.
The race has also been a favourites race over the years with heaps of short priced horses winning, so we suggest steering clear of roughies if you can help it.
