Race Preview

The Spring Champion Stakes is a Group 1 race held at Randwick racecourse in Sydney each October on Epsom Handicap Day; a huge day of racing including four Group 1 events, the others being the Epsom Handicap, The Metropolitan and the Flight Stakes. The race is open to 3-year-olds at Set Weights conditions and is held over a distance of 2000 metres and carries prize money of $300,000.

It was first run in 1971 and was upgraded to Group 1 status in 1979. Some great horses have won the race over the years including Savabeel, Niello, Universal Prince, Dignity Dancer, Tie The Knot and Kingston Town. It was won last year by Sousa. Interestingly, no filyl has ever won the Spring Champion Stakes.

Pay close attention to important lead up races to this race. Group races such as the NJC Spring Stakes, Gloaming Stakes and Dulcify Stakes have been great guides in recent years as they are similar in distance and conditions. The Spring Stakes was taken out this year by Lovemelikearock over Viking Legend and Euphemism. The Gloaming Stakes was this year won by So You Think over Gathering and Heraklion. While the Dulcify Stakes was won by Rhyno Chaser ahead of Emperor Bonaparte and Vilayet.
