The Storm Queen Stakes is a Group 1 race held every April at Rosehill racecourse. It is raced over a distance of 2,000 meters and is run under same weight conditions. The race is open to three year old filles and carries a prize purse of $400,000.
This race is one of five Group 1 races held on Slipper Day with those races including the Golden Slipper Stakes, George Ryder Stakes, Queen Of The Turf Stakes and The BMW. It’s the first race of the autumn carnival for fillies to be held over 2000m and trainers use it as an ideal lead up race to the Group1 AJC Australian Oaks held a couple of weeks later.
It was first run in 1979 and upgraded to Group 1 status in 1992. Some fabulous horses have been successful in this race over the years with names such as Miss Finland, Serenade Rose, Special Harmony, Savannah Success, Champagne and Northwood Plume all prevailing.
Fillies races are hard to pick at the best of times, but taking a quick look over the past decade of results show the favourites have had great success, so pick outsiders at your own peril. Also be sure to pay close attention to two key lead up races in the Armanasco Stakes and the Kewney Stakes held several weeks earlier. Most winners come via these two races.
We suggest paying close attention to whatever runner trainer Lee Freedman enters into the race because he has a superb record in the Storm Queen Stakes over the years.
