The BMW is a Group 1 race held every April at Rosehill racecourse. It is raced over a distance of 2,400 meters and is run under weight for age conditions. The race is open to three years and olders of any sex and carries a prize purse of $2,250,000.

The BMW is one of the richest races on the Australian racing calendar and is held on Slipper Day; the same day as four other Group 1 races including the Golden Slipper Stakes, George Ryder Stakes, Queen Of The Turf Stakes and Storm Queen Stakes. The race is regarded as the premier distance race of the Sydney autumn carnival and every year the countries best distance runners participate. Many regard this race as the best of the autumn carnival, due to the quality of horses that feature.

It was first run in 1963 and has held Group 1 status since 1980. The race is actually registered as the H.E. Tancred Stakes, but is better known as the BMW due to sponsorship arrangements. Some of Australia’s greatest ever horses have taken out this race with notable winners including Grand Zulu, Curata Storm, Octagonal, Kaaptive Edition, Bonecrusher and Kingston Town. The BMW is also used as a lead up race to the Group 1 AJC Queen Elizabeth Stakes.

Spotting Winners

With such a high quality field, picking winners in The BMW is tough, as can be seen by some long odds winners in previous years. One thing to look for is form in lead up races such as the Ranvet Stakes and Chipping Norton Stakes. As this is a race of similar distance and conditions, plus the fact they have produced multiple BMW winners, they are a must to look at.

We’d also recommend looking at John Hawkes trained horses as he has a suburb record in this race, as does jockey Shane Dye. Don’t be afraid to pick a mare as they have a good record in this race, particularly the last decade. As do 3-year-old horses, ten have won since The BMW was first run in 1963.
