The BMW
The BMW is one of the major races of the Sydney autumn racing carnival. It is a Group 1 event held in either March or April each year and is Australia's richest weight for age staying race with a prize purse of $2,271,400. It's raced over a distance of 2400m and is now regarded by many as the premier distance race of the carnival.
The race was first held in 1963 as the H.E. Tancred Stakes as a 2000m quality handicap. It has been weight for age since 1977 and in 1980 was upgraded to Group 1 status. The event is still registered as the H.E. Tancred Stakes, but is referred to as The BMW. Grand Zulu (2004) holds the fastest recorded time at 2:25.70.
Previous winner of The BMW reads as a who's who of Australian racing with an honour roll including Kingston Town, Hyperno, Octagonal, Tie The Knot and Might And Power. More recently Ethereal, Freemason, Maybe Diva and Tuesday Joy have won The BMW. Tie The Knot and Octagonal are the only multiple winners of The BMW.
The race is held on one of Australia's biggest days of racing - Golden Slipper Day. The BMW is one of four Group 1 races held on the day which also includes the Golden Slipper, Queen Of The Turf Stakes, Storm Queen Stakes and George Ryder Stakes. The BMW is the second richest race of the day and one of the most anticipated on the Autumn calendar.
The Ranvet Stakes, held a fortnight earlier, is generally a good guide to use when analysing the field in The BMW. In the past decade, there have been many horses that have run well in the Ranvet Stakes and then gone on to win The BMW. Last year's winner, Tuesday Joy, won both the Ranvet Stakes and BMW. In 2000, the same three horses ran the trifecta in the Ranvet Stakes and The Bmw, while in 2003 the same three horses that placed in the Ranvet also placed in The BMW.
