The Toorak Handicap is a Group 1 race held on the Caulfield Guineas Day at Caulfield racecourse in Melbourne. The race is one of the better mile races of the Spring carnival and will usually always attract a strong field of horses. It is ran over a distance of 1600 metres and is an open handicap race. It is held the same day as two other Group 1 races including the Caulfield Guineas and the Yalumba Stakes.
It was first run in 1881 and was upgraded to Group1 status in 1979. Notable winners include Alamosa last year, Roman Arch, Show A Heart, Umrum and Galilee. The last 3-year-old C&G to win this race was K Cid way back in 1929, while it is interesting to note that no filly has ever won this race. It has produced 9 Caulfield Cup winners, so it is a highly regarded race.
Pay close to attention to lead up races when analysing the field in the Caulfield Guineas. The Sir Rupert Clarke Stakes is probably the best indicator coming into the Toorak Handicap as it is a 1400m Handicap race. Turffontein won the 2009 Sir Rupert Clarke Stakes paying $15, while Stickpin and Raffaello finished in second and third.
