The Queen Elizabeth Stakes is a Group 1 event held on Stakes Day at Flemington. It is held on the fourth day of the Flemington Carnival, the Saturday after the Melbourne Cup. The race itself is a quality handicap race ran over a distance of 2500 metres and carries prize money totalling $250,000. The race is often used by horses on their way to the Group 1 Sandown Classic ran a week later. It is held on the same day as Group 1 races the Emirates Stakes and Patinack Farm Classic.

It was first run in 1954 and became a Group 3 race in 2005. And some truly great horses have won this race, including Makybe Diva (2002), Might And Power (1998) and Pindi (1995). Makybe Diva was in fact the last mare to win this race.

Many horses who compete in the Melbourne Cup often back up again and race in the Queen Elizabeth Stakes, such is the quality of the race. This year is no different, with many horses backing up. The Saab Quality is also a good indication of form, with the last few winners coming through this race.
