The Sires Produce Stakes is a Group 2 event held annually at Flemington racecourse in Melbourne, the same day as three Group 1 race in the Newmarket Handicap, Australian Cup and Australian Guineas. It is run over a distance of 1400 metres and is open to 2-year-olds at set weights.

Over the years, winners of this race have gone on to much bigger and better things as the honour roll shows. Horses like Testa Rossa, Rostova, Von Costa De Hero, Kaapstad, Canny Lad and Tulloch have all been victorious in this race.

The race has changed formats over the years, since it was first run in 1862. It was a Group 1 race up until 2004 where it was downgraded to Group 2 status. It has also been run over a distance of 1200m and 1600m, but has been run over 1400m since 1919.

The race is used as the ideal lead up for Group 1 races later on in the carnival such as the Golden Slipper, AJC Sire’s Produce Stakes and Champagne Stakes. The best indication of form for this race is the Blue Diamond Stakes held a fortnight earlier at Caulfield. So be sure to analyse that race before when looking at prospects.
