The WA Oaks is a Group 3 race held every April at Ascot racecourse. It is raced over a distance of 2,400 meters and is run under same weight conditions. The race is open to three year old filles and carries a prize purse of $250,000.
It was first run in 1953 and was actually a Group 1 race between the years of 1979-91, but downgraded to Group 2 status between 1992-2005. It was downgraded again in 2006 to Group 3 status where it has remained.
The WA Oaks is actually Western Australia’s premier event for 3yo fillies and attracts the best local fillies. But in over the last few decades it has failed to attract the countries best gallopers like the VRC Oaks and AJC Oaks, which is the reason of the downgrade in status.
Some of the notable winners include Grand Journey, Honor Lap, Old Money, Beaux Art, Hasty Departure, Trappings and Judyann.
We’d suggest looking at important lead up races. The Listed St Leger is often a good guide for this race, as is the Listed Natasha Stakes in particular.
It is interesting to note that no WA Oaks winner has ever won a Perth Cup. Also worth noting is this is a race for the favourites, not many roughies have won in recent times so we recommend staying clear of outsiders.
