Long time Melbourne Cup favourite out of the spring

White Marlin, a long time Melbourne Cup favourite, has unfortunately sustained an injury that will keep him away from the racing scene for a minimum of 12 months.

While official word is pending from the stable of Gai Waterhouse and Adrian Bott, it has been reported on racing.com that the six-year-old import has undergone injuries to both of his front tendons.

The striking grey racehorse had just arrived in Melbourne last Thursday, with plans to kick off his spring campaign at Caulfield on September 2nd. Regrettably, news broke that the injuries had been detected early on Saturday morning, putting a halt to his anticipated return.

In a promising display earlier in the week, White Marlin showcased his readiness to vie for the Melbourne Cup, delivering an impressive performance during his trial at Randwick. His performance, coming in second to My Oberon, was indicative of his preparedness.

Last spring, White Marlin garnered significant attention and positioned himself as a frontrunner in the 2023 Melbourne Cup market by securing victory in the G3 Queen Elizabeth Stakes (2500m).

White Marlin was a $17 chance in Melbourne Cup odds with Unibet prior to the news broke.
